Telmo Rodriguez ‘Gaba do Xil’ Godello 2014
There's a hint of lanolin and wax as usual for Godello, but lemon-melon-pear are the main flavours, particularly canned pear. Texture is slinky-creamy with mineral and a nip of fresh acid at the finish.
D.O. Valdeorras is the eastern most wine zone in Galicia. Garnacha, Palomino and the indigenous, Godello and Mencia grape are extensively planted. If carefully vinified, the wines can be aromatic with an alcoholic strength between 12 and 13%.
Valdeorras is Telmo and Pablo's most recent project, even though it was the first region they visited together at the beginning of the 1990s. After visiting several local towns, they came away greatly impressed, especially after meeting a grower who still pruned his vines using an implement from the Middle Ages. They are convinced that the meeting with the grower was the catalyst to them working in the region.
In the town of Santa Cruz, they found a vineyard called La Falcoeira. It is an ancient vineyard, planted with a mixture of varieties, but Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodriguez has focused its work on the native varieties, Godello and Mencia. Telmo and Pablo think that the area has enormous potential, and could be one of the great discoveries from the past.
