Pipoli Vigne del Vulture Basilicata Aglianico 2013
Aglianico del Vulture, made from the Aglianico grape, is this small, deep southern region's claim to wine fame. Its depth of colour and impressive tannin level certainly distinguish it in youth although it needs many years in bottle to show its best.
"Drinkability is the key feature though it comes with more that a spot of complexity. It has a yum, easy-going deliciousness, never a bad thing but nothing at first to elevate it. It’s fairly loose-knit (though tannin builds with air) and cherried with soft, succulent fruit. Where it gets interesting is the finish, which has a meaty, ashen, coal-like character. It ramps up the interest. Nothing here though is in your face. Go looking, and you’ll find something extra. But if you just want something for the tumbler, then it’s perfectly suited too. In the end, the fact that its excellent drinking and value almost goes without saying." 90 points Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
