Neudorf Tom's Block Pinot Noir 2013
“Very pale crimson. Edgy, sweet but not sickly, and transparent. Very fine and refreshing. Really savoury and convincing. Not burgundy but so much drier and more interesting than the NZ PN norm. Mineral finish. Very charming.”— Jancis Robinson MW
“A striking bouquet with much of what I like about Pinot Noir on display – complex with layers of light red fruit which are both just ripe to ripe, a savory mineral layer that teases the nose; light old rose moments . Another fine example of Nelson Pinot Noir. Five Stars” Cameron Douglas MS
Wild yeast, unfined, unfiltered.
Thrilling, complex, earthy.
Enticing wine reminiscent of a summer afternoon; dried hay, ripe brambles and berries, and sun warmed earth. Its charm is its accessibility, but underneath is a gently persuasive hand of minerality to maintain focus.
Tannin structure is elegant and fine. The oak handling and fruit ripeness are harmonious and the overall concept of the wine is vibrant, plush and attractive.
Neudorf’s fingerprint of minerality lends a refreshing, salivatory note which enhances “second glass” appeal.
Grapes for this wine are sourced largely from our Moutere clay-gravel vineyards – the Neudorf Home Block, Flaxmore, and Pomona – sited above the water at Ruby Bay.
Weather at fruitset was clement and resulted in well filled bunches. A warm dry summer with late rain resulted in a well ripened early vintage.
The grapes were hand picked mainly from our Moutere clay-gravel hillside vineyards, cold soaked and wild yeast fermented. The young wine spent ten months in (22% new) french barriques before being bottled in March 2014 without fining or filtration at 5.1gl TA, 3.68 pH and 14% Alc.
