Muller Catoir Gutswein QBA Trocken 2013
Regular price $34.00
Screwcap. It's quite rare to see this kind of wine outside Germany and originally we had to work very hard to convince the Estate to sell us some. Gutswein is the base classification in the VDP for house wines that are blends of Estate fruit. Müller-Catoir do not typically export this wine; they bottled it in 1 litre format and sell it only to local restaurants. Some years ago, we spied some bottles in the winery and demanded a glass. After three years of trying, we finally received our first small parcel of this juicy offering in 2011. It's a blend of (mainly) Riesling, with lesser amounts of Rieslaner, Scheurebe and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and comes entirely from the 2013 harvest. You won't find the vintage on the bottle as a Gutswein classification doesn't allow for the vintage to be stated. This is a lot of fun and a cracking value. It's a lightning-bolt of racy freshness although there is plenty of silky texture and depth to balance this out. The aromas suggest chamomile, crab apple, white flowers and fresh lime while the palate is zesty, juicy and crunchy. Each sip is like taking a whistle-bright, mineral shot. It finishes with refreshing saline and mineral tang. Liquid invigoration is the name of the game.
