Gracedale Hills Estate Shiraz 2013
Gracedale Hills Estate was established in 1996 by Richard and Verna Gutch in the cooler upper Yarra Valley. The property is on the Yarra River, 10km south of Healsville, in the subregion of Woori Yallock. They neighbour the Mayer vineyard and the slopes of Mt Toolebwong.
The vineyard is at an altitude of 100-145m. Planted with only Chardonnay and Shriaz, the vineyard is ideally situated on north-easterly facing slopes, above the valley floor. This allows for good drainage and longer ripening periods producing complex flavours in the grapes.
Fruit is hand-picked and vinified by Mac Forbes, previously of Mount Mary and now making wines under his own name with the aim of capturing unique terroir within the Yarra Valley. Wines are fermented using indigenous yeasts and matured in high quality new and used French oak barriques.
An elegant, spicy expression of Yarra Valley shiraz, with notes of blackberry, cocoa bean and star anise.
