In 2003 the Calabria family who own Calabria Family Wines decided to embark on a visionary program to source, import, and plant the quality red grape varieties of Southern Italy, which was their ancestral home.

In 2005 this program was matched with the planting of Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Prosecco to accompany the red wines.

The Calabria family now live in the Riverina of Southern New South Wales, and the young vines where planted in specially selected vineyards in this area.

The Pinot Bianco grape bunches are harvested at night to preserve freshness, then fully destemmed, lightly crushed and softly pressed to extract the aromatic juice. The lightly clarified juice with some grape solids is fermented in older hogshead barrels with natural ‘wild’ yeast which leads to a long warm ferment. Once dry the wine is aged in the same barrels on ‘lees’ for six months before blending, stabilisation and filtration for bottling.

The Calabria Pinot Bianco has been made in the ‘vino da casa’ style of the family ancestry. The wine was made traditionally using ancient techniques of natural yeast barrel fermentation with solids, without fining, and minimal filtration. Consequently the wine will cellar well for the medium to long term developing greater richness and toasty complex flavours.

This Pinot Bianco is a pale straw yellow colour with a delicate fragrance of green melon and white peach. The soft creamy palate is richly textured and full bodied with flavours of ripe peach, grapefruit and hints of fresh garden herbs. The savoury dry finish is long and lingering and will age well in the medium term.

Drink with gnocchi gorgonzola; pasta with salmon or other seafood sauces; roast chicken with garden herbs and lemon sauce; Fresh green salads; Pad Thai and Thai chicken salad; soft cheeses especially Brie, Blue styles and gorgonzola, Swiss style cheeses.
