Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc 2015

Regular price $30.00
It is always exciting to see how a new, incoming winemaker interprets a vineyard and wine so heavily associated with the previous incumbent. Michael Glover turned Bannockburn's Sauvignon on its head, and while Matt Holmes' first wine isn't quite as left-field as Glover's recent experiments, it's great to note that the wine has not lost an ounce of character.

Primarily cropped from the 1980 plantings on the eastern edge of the Winery Block, the 2015 also includes the first crop from young vines planted on the Olive Tree Hill. For his inaugural vintage, Holmes split the fruit three ways: one third was destemmed and lightly crushed before fermentation on skins for one week, finishing in older puncheons, another third was whole bunch pressed to puncheons and the remainder whole bunch pressed to tank. A wine of wonderful texture and complexity, there is a whisper of varietal character in that sort of nettle, resin, and vibrant gooseberry range. It also offers fantastic salty minerality (very Bannockburn) and some subtle skin contact complexity, alongside racy texture and pulp with excellent drive and length. In sum, more flesh and fruit than the Glover style.

"The skin fermented portion had a strong cinnamon note during ferment, and while ferment aromas don't always persist into the finished wine it has in this case. Some spice, and varietal marker green peas complete the nose. Full and yet dry, breadth from the skins, texture from the lees contact and yet refreshing acid on the palate."
