Airlie Bank Pinot Noir 2016
A fresh, delicate and fruit-filled Pinot from the Punt Road team. The wine is a combination of Block 13 Clones 115, 777 and MV6, and Block 12 Clone 777 Pinot. Both blocks planted in 2006. Yields around 4t/acre.
2016 was a warm, dry year, and fruit was picked early and fast. All the grapes came off the vine in a few days to get in ahead of the heat. There is more whole bunch, this year, (25%) and a shorter time on skins for all ferments – with maceration focused on cold soak. A few new French oak barrels from François Frères are included to give some sweetness to the mid-palate, but otherwise the wine is unoaked. It still has the red fruit spectrum vital in Yarra Pinot. There's some intriguing Campari bitterness from the bunch, as well as a graphite note. Rose petal, bergamot tea, orange rind. It's a touch more savoury than the 2015, and perhaps has greater pinosity.
