Calulu Park Chardonnay 2014

Regular price $17.00

Calulu Park was planted in 1982. The first fruit buyer was Coldstream Hills. The first wine under the Calulu Park label was produced in 2002.

The estate is 7 hectares and is situated in the Woori Yallock sub region of the Yarra Valley. The vineyard is dry grown, hand pruned, shoot thinned, bunch thinned and hand picked to 2.5 tonnes per acre.

Fruit is processed at Hoddles Creek Estate. Named James Halliday's “Best Value Winery” of the Year in his 2015 Wine Companion. Winemaker Franco D’Anne worked extensively in his family’s wine store in Kew, completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Melbourne University and a Bachelor of Viticulture at Charles Sturt University, while working vintages at Hoddles Creek and Coldstream Hills. His first vintages of Hoddles Creek were completed with Peter Dredge of Red Edge, and overseen by Mario Marson, ex-winemaker for Mount Mary and Jasper Hill.

About 30% of the fruit is whole bunch pressed, the remainder destemmed. Juice left to clarify naturally, at 2 degrees, for four days, then racked turbid to cask to begin fermentation. A combination of cultured and natural yeast is used for ferment. The wines then moved to aged oak-barrels and left on lees until November 2014. Sulphur added to promote further bottle age and complexity. The wine is filtered but not unfined before being bottled.

The Yarra Valley Chardonnay is all about texture. The nose exhibits some stone fruit and melon complimented with some char and spice from the oak. The acid and fine holds the wine together. Dry finish.
